Some are simple, like going to a garage to grab the cash. You start off with a map that shows which missions you can engage in based on where you are in the story, and those missions can break down into a few different types. There are three modes to Crime Boss: Rockay City, with the campaign mode receiving the most focus and split into very different gameplay mechanics. There's been plenty of focus on having a ton of big stars, but considering the quality of lines they're being given and how it fails to flow together coherently, it feels like money wasted. Some of the scenes barely hold together as far as connectivity to one another goes, while others are non sequiturs. Some of the scenes try to be serious, some are witty, and others feel like they're trying to be a parody of other crime-related games and movies. However, other simple premise isn't helped by the cut scenes, which veer off in wildly different directions and have vastly different tones. That would be fine, as most of those games don't need big, sprawling epic narratives to push things along.

The 1990s setting made it feel like someone wanted to emulate Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's vibe but with a cast of more recognizable actors being de-aged to their prime. The news is less good for those who are still on PS4 and Xbox One, as there have been no plans announced to bring the game to those platforms – so if you want to start kicking down doors with Michael Madsen and co, you'll need to upgrade your system. But will console players also be able to try it out? Well, according to the game's official website the Crime Boss: Rockay City release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X will be in June 2023, so as long as that release window doesn't slip there are only a couple of months to wait for current-gen console owners. Crime Boss: Rockay City is already out on PC, and although the reception has been somewhat mixed so far, we can tell you from our previous hands-on that it's a '90s fever dream FPS heist 'em up that's as wild as it is weird.
